Venue Spotlight ~ Selby Gardens in Sarasota, Florida

When planning a wedding or any social celebration, selecting the venue is key.  We assist our clients in determining the perfect venue for them by asking many questions to include among others, anticipated guest count as well as their vision of the theme and atmosphere. When it comes to weddings and social celebrations in Sarasota, there are so many options of venues available, from luxury hotels to historic homes, art museums, botanical gardens or of course, the beautiful beaches.  

One of the gorgeous venues that we love is Selby Gardens.  For historical information on Selby Gardens click here. The stunning beauty of the gardens coupled with the view of Sarasota Bay, creates a magical setting for an unforgettable event.

Weddings may be held anywhere throughout the Gardens. The most popular locations are the Schimmel Wedding Lawn and Pavilion, the Gazebo, the Banyan Grove, and The Wedding Oak adjacent to the Christy Payne Mansion. Additional areas that lend themselves to nuptial celebrations are the Great Room by the Bay indoors or outdoors at the Christy Payne Mansion.

Renovations have been underway at the Gardens, but are estimated to be complete by the first part of October which will also include an option for wedding party’s to arrive by boat on the south lawn side. 

The south lawn includes the Gazebo, Children’s Playground, and cocktail area looking over the bay, as well as a dance floor/seating area. This area can accommodate 250+ for a seated event.   There is not a backup plan on this side when it comes to weather, so usually a tent is booked. 

The Great Room by the Bay is smaller, consisting of 3600 square feet, however, for an indoor event it has a lot to offer. There is a large bay view, terrace for band or DJ, and the “wedding oak” which is picturesque for ceremony backdrop.

This is a private lawn to the side of the Gazebo that is a great space for a Cocktail Hour or small intimate dinner. The mangrove trees are being trimmed down to offer a better view of Sarasota Bay

Happy 4th of July!!!

We are less than a week away from one of my favorite Holiday’s, the 4th of July!  The 4th has always held a special place in my heart and remembering back to my teenage and young adult years, I LOVED spending the 4th at Island Park in Sarasota.  There would be a festival taking place all day and then fireworks would be shot off over the bay at dark.  Being with friends celebrating the Holiday made the day all the more special.  When my daughters were young, we would usually spend the 4th with my brother in Orlando.  We would always have a cookout with a group of friends, hang out in the pool and even be able to see Disney’s fireworks from there.  It always seemed magical.  Although I’m not in Sarasota or Orlando this year, I do plan on celebrating locally with friends and family and look forward to watching fireworks to bring the special day to a close.

Superheros were present when Ali & Chris Tied the Knot

This wedding was filled with so many personal touches and LOVE!  One of the things I always tell and encourage my clients is to bring their personalities into the wedding, therefore branding and creating a truly unique celebration!  Ali & Chris did just that.  

I loved the Escort Cards display!  Ali procured photos of all of her guests which were used to inform guests of their table assignment.  She made adorable signage  that said “Find your Face to Find Your Place”.  Very unique and creative.

The groom and his party wore superhero shirts that they had fun exposing during the photos.  Even his cake topper had a superhero cape.   Super cute!!!

Ali & Chris wore custom converse sneakers monogrammed with Mr. J and Mrs. J.

Guests received personalized ceramic coasters as their favors to remember the wonderful wedding!

We wish Ali & Chris a lifetime of Happiness!!!!

It’s a 50th Anniversary Celebration {also known as the Super Bowl}

As you may know, a 50th Anniversary is the Golden anniversary and is certainly a time for celebration!  This Sunday, we all are invited to the HUGE Golden celebration also known as SUPER BOWL 50!  

Now, I’m not a football fan – other than checking the weekly college scoreboard for my favorite team {Go Gators!}, but I do get excited about the Super Bowl for a few reasons — Delicious snacks, the Half-Time show and the COMMERCIALS!!!!  Plus – it’s a great excuse for a party and we all know I love any excuse to have a celebration!!!

Super Bowl Spectacular

The Super Bowl is this Sunday and that always means it’s time for a party.  It doesn’t necessarily matter whether “your” team is in the Super Bowl or not – but the excitement of the day leads to cravings for delicious snacks and beverages with your closest friends.  So whether you are hosting the Big Game party or attending one elsewhere, we’ve created a Pinterest board with many suggestions and ideas.  You will find menu’s, recipes, decor and games – everything you should need to have a fabulous party!  

Personally, I will be watching for the commercials and Half-time show, but guaranteed, I’ll have some tasty snacks and drinks around – after all it is a reason to indulge!!

BBQ, Friends & Fireworks for the 4th of July!!

Summer is the perfect time for grilling and spending time with friends, but the 4th of July seems to be the official Day to Grill of the Summer Season.

Whether you are hosting a party at your home or celebrating at the lake or beach, I want to share a few ideas on decor, menus, and even cute outfits!

If your party will be outside, making sure the area is comfortable for your guests is important.  If the celebration will last into the evening, make sure to incorporate lighting into your decor plans.  Using candles is an excellent way, but you could also string lights around the perimeter of the party area.  It’s also a good idea, especially in the south, to provide bug spray for your guests, so they don’t get bitten by mosquito’s.  You could have citronella candles placed around or even oil torches filled with the citronella repellent.

Do as much of the preparation ahead of time as possible, so that you can spend the time with your guests.  If you will be grilling, prepare the meat ahead of time with any seasoning or marinade and then keep chilled until time to put on the grill.  If you will be serving the meal outside, remember to keep any food items containing mayonnaise chilled until right before serving and then put back in the refrigerator immediately after the meal to avoid spoiling.

As your guests arrive, greet them with a beverage.  Something fruity, like a pink lemonade spritzer garnished with blueberries would be appropriate and keeping with the Red, White & Blue theme.

Plan ahead to have music playing.  You could hire a DJ, or if using your own iPod, create a perfect 4th of July Playlist.  There are so many songs that relate to the patriotic holiday as well as other songs that just have an underlying Americana theme.  You can gear the music to be a little more sedate during the meal, but ramping up to full dance party after.

If kids will be at the party, having activities to keep them entertained is important.  Having them work on a themed craft when they arrive that can later be used for additional decor is a great idea.  Perhaps have poster board and markers along with crepe paper, stickers, glitter, etc., so that they can make signs and banners for a Kid’s Parade.

For the kid’s and adults, have a photo booth type of area set up where guests can take a photo to remember the fun celebration.  Having a backdrop that keeps with the theme would be wonderful and definitely a conversation piece.

Setting the table could be as formal or casual as you like.  There are some great tableware pieces available ~ some even at your local grocery store ~ or if you have white place settings, then adding in the color with the napkins and glassware would be easy.  Or if you prefer not to have dishes to deal with after the party, then use disposable serviceware.  You can certainly find themed items at your local party supply store, but choosing solid color plates, napkins, cups and plastic utensils works just fine.  Use a festive “firework” place card to indicate your guests seating assignment.  If you are having a buffet, you could use small metal pails to place the utensils in for guests to grab as they go through the line.  You can also keep beverages on-ice in a large metal pail so guests can serve themselves.  Just make sure to keep it replenished throughout the party so the beverages stay cold.

The menu can consist of whatever you desire, but there are some items that just scream 4th of July – like Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, BBQ Ribs or Hot Wings.  Add in sides to please the gang like Potato Salad, Baked Beans, Grilled Corn on the Cob.  For dessert, there are a ton of options that go along with the patriotic theme, from a bowl of berries, to red, white & blue ice cream, to cakes, brownies, cupcakes all decorated for the 4th to homemade Popsicle’s or homemade star-shaped ice cream sandwiches.

As important as the decor and menu is what you will wear!  The location of the party certainly dictates what is appropriate, but keeping with the theme of the 4th {Red, White & Blue, Stars & Stripes, etc} just makes you feel more festive!!!

Whether you decide to shoot off fireworks yourself or you go to a fireworks display – in my mind, there is no better ending to a fabulous 4th of July!!!

A Special Valentine’s Celebration ~ Girlfriends Edition

Now I know that Valentine’s Day is supposed to be for LOVER’S, but what about those of us that don’t have a significant other in our lives at this time?  Should we be completely left out for this sweet Holiday?  I think not – and so what better way to share the love of your best girlfriends than to have a Party just for the GIRLS!  There are so many options of what you could do, from a night out on the town, dinner and a movie, or what about a GNI ~ Girls Night In!!! {Of course you can change the time frame to a Brunch if that suits you better!} Change your outlook on the whole “Holiday” and focus on the special bonds of friendship with the girls that keep you grounded instead of the outside influences that can make you feel that being alone on Valentine’s Day is just a reason to be depressed!

Once you have made the decision to have a party for your best girlfriends, of course the next step is to send out the invitations.  There are so many options for the style of invitations you can select.  You could of course opt for an online invitation from sources such as Paperless Post, or a personal email, but since this is a special get-together, why  not go all out and select an invitation that goes along with your desired theme.

Next determine the menu.  This will of course vary depending upon the time of day you are hosting your BFF Party!  Use this as a time to have delicious, fun to eat options and not necessarily things that are only healthy options.  Splurge a little and have decadent treats.  It goes without saying that tasty beverages should be offered.  You could have a signature drink to begin the celebration or set up a beverage station where guests can mix up their own refreshing beverage. Desserts that make your mouth water are a definite!  Whatever you decide to offer, chocolate is a MUST!!

Depending on the theme of your party, make sure to have the appropriate items available.  A Spa party is one idea, and what girl doesn’t enjoy being pampered with spa treatments.  You could have a table set with items for each guest to use during the party and then take home with them after.  How about a Lingerie or Pajama Party ~ for a Lingerie party, each guest could bring a piece of lingerie wrapped up and then play a game like “Steal the Gift” so each person ends up with a new piece of lingerie.  A Pajama Party would be perfect if you are having a sleepover.  Have your guests arrive in the PJ’s and then reminisce like young school-girls when you use to have sleepovers.  Maybe you would rather have a movie night – so having finger foods and perhaps a make-your-own-popcorn creation station would be perfect.  If you are a GAME person, then having Girls Game Night would be a fun theme.  Board games would be perfect or maybe you and your friends prefer card games.  Some fun, interactive games could be:

“Never Have I Ever.” This game is sure to weed out the wild ones in your group. Everyone starts the game with three fingers raised. (You could also give everyone three coins or three small objects instead of using raised fingers.) You go around the room with each person saying, “Never have I ever…” and then finishing that sentence. The answers could be outlandish (“…had my eyebrows waxed”) or adventurous (“…gone skydiving”). If someone else in the room has done the crazy thing, the person making the statement has to put one of their fingers down. The last finger standing wins.

“Who? What? When? How?” This is a good get-to-know-each-other game if you make your questions creative. Put out some squares of paper and pens for everyone. Have everyone write down a personal who, what, when or how question and take turns drawing and answering. You’ll find out things about each other you never knew!

Most ladies enjoy an elegant dinner setting, so take the opportunity to set out your finest china and crystal and either make or purchase lovely centerpieces.  You can go elaborate with your decor, or more simplistic, you can DIY or use the services of your favorite floral designer.

Come Inside, It’s Fun Inside for Brayden’s 1st Birthday!

A very special 1-year-old deserves a very special celebration, and that’s just what we had for Brayden.

One of the first TV shows that captured his attention was Mickey Mouse Clubhouse – so it seemed only fitting for that to be the theme of his party. With the theme set, we began the design process for the decor.  The centerpieces were one of the first designs to create.  We started out with Terracotta plant pots and painted them red.  To give them the look of Mickey’s pants, white buttons were attached around the rim.  Next was to create the Mickey silhouette.  For this, we used 2 different sizes of cardboard cake boards.  A 12″ diameter was used for the face, and 6″ diameter ones were used for the ears.  These were then painted black and a clear gloss sealant added for shine.  To attach the ears, we used short lollipop sticks.  For the stem (body), we used bamboo skewers which were also painted black.  To hold the silhouette in the container, a half sphere styrofoam was placed in the bottom of the pot and was secured with double-sided tape.  To finish the design off, yellow tissue paper was placed inside the container to cover the mechanics and to also bring in the color for Mickey’s outfit.

Another design we created was Mickey Mouse chinese lanterns.  To make these, we used red and black lanterns.  Using the 6″ diameter cardboard cake boards, these were painted red and black.  To attach the ears to the lantern, we used the bamboo skewers and bound them with rubber bands to hold them securely in place.

Designing the menu was fun.  We knew we wanted to use labels that would coincide with the theme, so we  came up with cute names for the items to be served, such as Hot Diggity Dogs for the Pigs in a Blanket, Mickey’s Clubhouse sandwiches, Pluto’s Puppy Chow, Chip and Dales Chips and Dip, Donald’s Dunkers, and Daisy’s Vegetable Garden.  For the beverages, we set up Toodles Thirst Station.

We created a custom backdrop to be used as a Photo Spot for guests as they came in!

Since there were Adults and Kids at the party, we  designated a “Kid’s Table” where coloring sheets were placed on the table for the kid’s to color.  We had Mickey Ears for all of the young guests to wear.  We also had set up a Kid’s bowling game – which was a hit!  During the party the stand-by game of Pin the Tail on the Donkey was played and I think there were some adults that wanted to get in on that game too.

The cake was adorable!  It had the design of Mickey’s Clubhouse on it complete with figurines of the characters.  A separate “smash cake” was made just for the Birthday Boy ~ and he definitely had a great time diving in to it!

Post-Wedding Brunch ~ Groom’s Night Out ~ Engagement Party ~ Rehearsal Dinner Ideas!!

Atlanta has a ton of options for where to have your special event regardless of whether it is a wedding, mitzvah, anniversary or birthday celebration, Engagement Parties, Bridesmaids Luncheons, Groom’s Gatherings or any other special occasion and many times once the decision is made for where to have the MAIN event, you are trying to figure out where to have other segments of the celebration.  Most of my clients opt to have the extraneous celebrations at locations other than the main venue so that their guests can experience more of what the city has to offer.  Sometimes the clients want to keep the other activities close by where the main celebration will be for ease of guest transportation and that is always something to consider.  However, regardless of whether your guests are based in Downtown, Midtown, Buckhead or elsewhere, you definitely have options of where to go and how to get there.  

Transportation companies that we work with offer a variety of vehicles to assist in transporting your guests.  Some clients opt for a “FUN” and somewhat unique method of transporting their guests, like a Trolley, while others opt for more of a party-type vehicle like a limo-bus that offers comfortable seating around the perimeter of the vehicle with special lights and usually built-in bars.  This type of transportation allows for your guests to begin the party enroute to the celebration and if your guests don’t all know each other, this will also encourage mingling so that the group can become comfortable.  After all, they are there for the same purpose — Your celebration. Of course there are also standard Shuttle Buses that can accommodate various numbers of guests ranging from 10 – 56 passengers. 

The WHERE to go is the subject at hand and with all that Atlanta has to offer, making a selection can be difficult.  We are here to assist with making the best decision for your group and can arrange any and all of the details for you.  There are a few locations that I feel warrant mention.

One happens to be Davio’s Northern Italian Steakhouse located in Buckhead. Under the direction of Executive Chef, Richard Lee and Sous-Chef, Carlos Tavarez, the menu offers tasty options ~ whether you are in the mood for a delicious steak from any of their fine cuts of meat, or the classic well-known recipes such as their Tagliatelle Bolognese, Crispy Chicken Livers, Homemade Sausages, Veal Scaloppini or something from their wide selection of fresh seafood dishes, you can rest assured that you will have an amazing meal.   I’ve written about Davio’s before as an excellent location for a Rehearsal Dinner or a romantic anniversary or birthday dinner, but they also offer the option of using the restaurant before normal business hours, for a day-after Brunch.  You could have your Brunch from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM and have the restaurant to yourself.  Depending upon the number of guests, the clients preferences and the weather, the brunch could utilize the fabulous covered Terrace.  For a minimum of 20 guests, they offer a Breakfast Buffet at the cost of $22.50 Per Person.  The menu consists of clients choice of 2 entrees (Scrambled Eggs, Spinach and Tomato Frittata or French Toast, Mascarpone, Warm Maple Syrup) along with the following Side Dishes and Condiments ~ Sausage or Bacon, Home Fried Potatoes, Seasonal Fresh Fruit Salad, Bagels, Cream Cheese, Tomatoes, Preserves, Muffins, Croissants, Preserves and Butter in addition to Orange Juice, Coffee, Tea and Decaffeinated Coffee.  There is also the option of an Omelet Station which would be Chef Attended for an additional $7.50 per person.  I’m hungry just thinking about this!

Davio’s also happens to be a wonderful location for a Groom’s Night Out, or an Engagement Party.  With private event rooms that can accommodate 10 to 80 in Private settings or with a restaurant buy-out they can accommodate up to 300 guests.

One of their signature dishes for Appetizers is a sampling of Spring Rolls, Buffalo Chicken, Chicken Parmesan, Philly Cheese Steak and Shrimp Cotija Spring Rolls.  These are undoubtedly the BEST Spring Rolls I have ever tasted.  I could easily make my meal off of the Buffalo Chicken and the Chicken Parm Spring Rolls.

For businesses looking for a wonderful option for a Corporate Lunch – Davio’s can accommodate this type of event as well.  You can select from various menus of a seated meal.  

One of the special types of Private Dining they offer is a Chef’s Tasting.  The Chef’s Table is an epicurean adventure that is sure to delight your party’s taste for fine cuisine.  Their team will offer an exclusive dining experience for 6 to 14 guests to take part in a chef’s designed tasting menu with paired wines from their extensive list. This type of experience is especially created for those who have a passion for fine food and wine.

With an in-house Pastry Chef, their dessert creations are not only visually appealing but very delicious.  Pastry Chef, Kathleen Miliotis, creates homemade breads, pastries, ice creams and desserts fresh every day!

Everyone that you come in contact with at Davio’s makes you feel welcomed and important.  You will always see the General Manager, Claude Guillaume, walking around and greeting guests as well as the Assistant Manager, Paul Dunn and the Floor Manager, Peter Kuluberis.  Amy Howard is the Sales Manager and she is awesome to work with.  She is one of those people who you feel an instant connection with and her attention to detail, and customer service is exemplary!!!  

 

Another wonderful restaurant option that does offer Private Event Space is Brio Tuscan Grill.  There are two locations, Buckhead and Perimeter/Dunwoody.  The Buckhead location can accommodate Private Groups ranging from 24 to 60 guests in one of two rooms while the Perimeter/Dunwoody location can accommodate from 10 to 60 guests in one of three special rooms.  The Perimeter/Dunwoody location also offers a Bocce Ball court – where your guests can enjoy a game throughout the event.  They offer a rather large Private Dining menu to select from for Luncheons, Dinners or even All-Day Meetings.

Brio is another restaurant that is a wonderful choice for Rehearsal Dinners, Engagement Parties  Bridal Showers or Groom’s Night Out.  With excellent food and service and a full bar, you can’t go wrong taking your guests for a special occasion here.
