Ways to Honor the Memory of a Loved One in a Wedding

Many times, my clients will have a deceased parent, grandparent, sibling or someone else important to them and they want to incorporate a way to honor their memory into their wedding.  There are many ways to do this and I’ll share a few ways that we have used to incorporate honoring the memory of those loved ones. 

Displaying photos is always a touching tribute.

Another way to incorporate photos, is to use them as a charm to attach to a bouquet or boutonniere.

For one of my clients whose mother had passed away, she wanted her to be close to where the couple would exchange vows, so we placed a sign and flowers beside the altar area.

One of the most special ways of honoring the memory of a bride’s mom, was a custom necklace the groom had made of the bride’s moms actual handwriting.

For this bride, placing her dad’s favorite flower in her bouquet was the special way of honoring him.

Attaching a hanky or a piece of cloth to the bride’s bouquet or dress is a touching way to have the loved one close to you.

Similarly, attaching a piece of jewelry to either a bouquet or the wedding dress is a way of keeping the loved one close to your heart.

Many couples choose to place a message in memory in their Ceremony Programs, which is a very sweet tribute.

Placing a flower on an empty chair at the wedding is another way to remember a loved one.

And one of the most powerful way’s to honor those who have passed was this Table Set for One.  This particular wedding was for a police officer who was previously in the military.  The table represented his friends who have lost their life serving their country or protecting citizens.

Once Upon a Time…The Fairytale of Jenny & Ben

It was such a magical wedding weekend for Jenny & Ben!  Short back story – they are avid Disney fans and became engaged at Disney World in front of the castle.  Ben works as a writer in the film industry in L.A. and they are both very much into “geeky” things.  The hashtag for the wedding was a nod to one of their favorite trilogy’s, “The Lord of the Rings” as well as a play on the groom’s last name – #FellowshipoftheStrings!

On the morning of the wedding, the ladies had a Disney themed Bridal Brunch.  Musicians welcomed the guests with strains of Disney songs.  Guests were given Mouse Ears as they entered with a special pair of a sparkly Bride ears for the Guest of Honor.  The decor around the room and on the tables was adorable Disney themed items including letters for the Bride’s new last name. 

While the ladies were brunching, the guys were lunching.  The guys had their gathering at Paddy’s Pub right onsite.  Good food and laughter (and a beverage or two) was abundant as all the special men in Ben’s life surrounded him on his wedding day.

When the ladies finished their brunch, they retreated to a private room to begin their hair and make-up appointments, provided by Brushworx On Location Hair and Make-up.  These ladies had so much fun and were so relaxed, which is exactly our goal. Of course, they all looked beautiful!  

There was one very special addition to the wedding gown.  Sewn into the dress, right where it would rest upon her heart, was a small, heart-shaped portion from the Bride’s favorite baby blankie.  I love details like this!!

Brenda of Brenda Upton Photography was onsite capturing all of the memories of the day.  Brenda had a vision in mind and wanted to make sure not to miss the opportunity of some amazing sunset photos.  She took the couple out through the vineyard, across a field and up a hill to an old tree that provided a view of the sun setting with mountains in the background.  During the trek with the couple her mantra was “follow the light”.  The result was a series of photos that are some of my favorites ever!!! {See photos in collage at bottom}.  Special thanks to Brenda for providing the beautiful images for this post.

The couple shared a First Look in the ceremony area and watching the look on their faces as they saw each other for the first time was magical.

Edge Design Group created the stunning decor.  The Chuppah was dreamy, with soft flowing fabrics and magnificent floral arrangements.  They had a Wine Box unity ceremony.  Personal letters from the bride and groom were placed inside a wooden box with a bottle of their favorite wine.  During the ceremony, they sealed the box and they won’t open it until their 1st Anniversary.

For Guest Registration, there were two antique typewriters available so guests could type a message to the couple.  There was also a custom wood puzzle made which guests would select a piece to sign a note and then place the piece on the display to put the puzzle together.

In keeping with the winery location, the mother hand-made a set of wine charms for each guest.  The charms had beads in the color of the wedding as well as a crab and a peach giving nod to the hometown states the couple’s families are from, Maryland and Georgia.

The ballroom was gorgeous!  Edge Design Group created a romantic and elegant setting.  The tables were draped with lovely champagne satin linens while the sweetheart table had an exquisite beaded overlay on top of the champagne.  The couple’s table was then adorned with a lush floral piece and a variety of candles providing a glowing sparkle. Throughout the rest of the room, there were combination of tall arrangements as well as low arrangements with varying heights of candles creating a romantic glow in the room. Softening the look of the wall behind the band were soft, flowing blush drapery creating a beautiful backdrop.

The cake table had a navy sequin linen that added to the presentation of the dramatic cake – created by a family friend for the couple.

Guests were entertained all evening by the sounds of U.S. Beat with their always amazing performance.

This wedding  was fun from beginning to end and when it was time for the party to end, guests were begging for more.

The couple departed through a ribbon fanfare to begin their new life together.

Alli & Brett get Handcuffed at their Wedding

As an Event Planner, you are responsible for making sure that everything goes perfectly for your clients, regardless of circumstances that are beyond your control.  This wedding was one of those events where keeping calm was KEY to making sure that the clients were unaware of all that was going behind the scenes and to make sure that the wedding went off as planned!

Let me give you a little background of the wedding day!  The wedding was held on Saturday of Gay Pride Weekend in Atlanta at the main host hotel for the viewing of the parade.  Ahead of the day, we were given a map of the slated road closures.  I made sure to provide the map as well as road closure timing to all vendors involved.  Unfortunately, the map provided was not accurate and additional roads were closed at times ahead of the previously provided scheduled times.  This of course resulted in difficulty for vendors (and even my team) to get to the Hotel timely.  Not to mention, the loading dock is located on a street that is closed for the parade! Situations from one vendor being threatened to be arrested, to two others receiving traffic citations were just a part of the day.  Of course, guests had difficulty getting to the venue as well.

What is important to note is that even with all of the issues of the day, every vendor pulled together to do whatever was necessary to create the perfect wedding for the couple.

The bride had a wonderful time getting out in the parade crowd.  Many of the parade-goers stopped her for a photo-op.  We also ran into a motorcycle officer that allowed the bride to pose with his bike.

The groom, is an Atlanta Police Officer with a great sense of humor so we were able to play around with the whole “law enforcement officer” theme,  The groom’s cake was Krispy Kreme Doughnuts.  The favors were chocolate hand-cuffs. At the end of the ceremony, the couple were hand-cuffed together as a fun surprise for all in attendance. The cake topper was a Police Officer holding his bride.  The table names were of police themed television shows and movies.  The bride is very crafty and created the signs herself.

I absolutely loved being able to incorporate the things most special to this couple to create a truly unique wedding.  That’s what it is all about!!!

One of the special attributes to pay honor to the men and women in the military and law enforcement whom have lost their lives was a “Table set for One”.  We positioned the table behind the dance floor so that it would be a prominent display throughout the evening. Another special tribute was a poem the Bride read for her Groom.  There wasn’t a dry eye in the room.

The floral decor, created by Jim White,  was stunning!  Elegant and romantic ~ pinks, blush, white and creams.  One of the focal points of the decor was the Estate Table with two tall arrangements and a floral garden centering the length of the table with lots of candles.

We had a really great group of vendors that went above and beyond extenuating circumstances to ensure a wonderful wedding for this adoring couple.  Unfortunately, professional images were not made available, so I’m sharing my snapshots.

Wedding Budget Tips

You just got engaged and are excited about beginning all of the plans for the wedding.  It’s easy to get carried away with all of the ideas that are going through your head – however, two of the main concerns you need to determine early on is the dreaded, BUDGET and the Guest List!

The budget will dictate the decisions that will be made and it directly impacts the Guest List.

Each person you include on your Guest List has an associated dollar amount connected to them.  That is why it is important to thoroughly vet your Guest List.  Generally the couple and their parents will create the guest list based upon who they feel should be invited.  There is always the “Must Invite” list but many times my clients will create a “B” and even a “C” list.  While it’s usually true that not every guest you invite will attend, you must consider the possibility that they will.  It’s also important to note that if you want to send out Save the Dates, whomever you send them to MUST be sent a wedding invitation, So if you have a “B” and/or “C” list, you need to take that into consideration.   Here’s a good infographic of how to determine your Guest List.

Once you have the draft of your Guest List, then you can begin searching for a venue (or let us do that legwork for you).  One of the first questions a venue will ask is, what is your estimated guest count, so that’s why it’s important to work on the Guest List first. Venues have a maximum capacity for their event space, so the estimated Guest count has to be considered to determine the appropriate space for your celebration.

Historic City Nuptials for Lindsay & Aaron

When you pair America’s oldest city, St. Augustine, Florida, with a sweet and beautiful couple, you get a spectacular wedding!!!

The historic city always held a special place in Lindsay’s heart, so when this Sarasota, Florida native was planning her wedding, St. Augustine was the logical choice.

The venue chosen was The White Room Loft and Rooftop located on the Matanzas River. With sweeping views of the River , The Bridge of Lions and old town St. Augustine, the setting was truly magical.

Lindsay and her Mom created so many beautiful touches for the wedding.  From a lovely Seating Assignment display to vintage photo albums containing photos of the couple.  To go along with the “vintage” camera era, Polaroid cameras were provided for guests to snap photos of themselves to place in a memory book for the couple.  Guests had so much fun!

The ceremony took place on the Roof top.  As guests arrived, they were greeted with Prosecco Pops while they mingled.  Then when it was time for the vows, they took their seat and watched as the couple exchanged vows with the gorgeous water view.  An interesting part of the ceremony was what they used as the Unity Ceremony.  Instead of a candle or sand, they used colored glass pieces that will later be blown into a lasting trinket for the couple to display in their home.

The guests were treated to an amazing array of food from delicious displays for Cocktail Hour with specialty beverages to a 5 course meal to a huge dessert display including a ROot Beer Float station, Hot Chocolate Station, Cookie display and a Strawberry Shortcake station.  Guests definitely left with full bellies.

As a post-wedding treat, the guests were suppose to go play mini-golf, however, a few weeks before the wedding, Hurricane Matthew hit and unfortunately destroyed the mini-golf course, so instead, guests were treated to a Trolley Ride through historic St. Augustine.  It was an excellent end to the evening.

Fall wedding beauty for Shelby & Drew!

Fall is such a beautiful time, with colorful leaves, usually crisp temperatures and blue skies.  When you add to that a gorgeous bride and a handsome groom, you have the makings for something spectacular! Such is the case for Shelby & Drew.

With venue, Foxhall Resort and Sporting Club, selected, Shelby begin putting her thoughts into the vision for her wedding day.  She selected The Stables as the ceremony and reception site, which lends itself to a rustic vibe – but NOT a mason jar type of vibe, rather an elegant, sophisticated rustic vibe.

She selected some pretty amazing vendors to carry out her vision, such as Christina Robbins (Hair) and McKenzie Mann (Make-up), Happy Everything Company (Photographer),  Low Country Catering, Sweet Creations by Candi Pittman (Cake), John Amoroso (Ceremony and Cocktail Hour Musician), Hip and Hitched (DJ & Sax player), Mary McLeod with Amy Osaba (Florals), Hometown Crew (Videographer) and ShutterBooth (PhotoBooth).  Along with the JBEvents Team, these vendors expertly created and conveyed Shelby’s dream wedding.

There were a couple of adorable features that we really loved.  One was a handmade cross used at the altar.  The other was the oar used for their guest registration.  As I try to impress on all of my clients, be unique, bring your personality out in the wedding – and this couple truly did.

Meggie & Matt Get Married!

A lovely day in a picturesque location was the perfect setting for Meggie & Matt to exchange vows in front of their family and friends.

The vision for the ceremony was to feel like you were in the woods.   Varying sizes of tree trunks were brought in to create an altar which was then accented with Lanterns and flowers.  Gracing the aisle were wood slices adorned with vases of white flowers with just a touch of soft pink flowers. With the surrounding trees and grassy knolls, the setting was magical.

A close friend of the couple designed and created other original items for the wedding.  One of the featured designs was a large, free-standing wooden sign crafted with an aluminum center held the table assignments for the reception.  The name of the couple was burned into the bottom for a lasting memory of their special day.  

There were also wooden signs created for the Bar and the Menu for the evening.

The reception decor inside the ballroom was a classic and elegant look with a mixture of low and high centerpieces creating visual interest and beauty.  A long Estate Table provided seating for the couple and their wedding party and was a focal point of the room.

Guests were highly entertained by a special toast from the Bride’s father — he welcomed Matt into the family providing a variety of props including a steer harness and branding iron.  The story that he gave during the toast had everyone in hysterics.

Fairy Tales Do Come True for Megan & Marcos!

You have heard me say it before and I know I will say it again, but I have the BEST clients in the world!!!!  This adorable couple hired me to plan and produce their beautiful wedding and it was such a blast.  Although the couple resides in Abu Dhabi, we successfully planned the wedding long-distance with only a couple of in-person meetings.  Megan trusted my recommendations which proved to relieve a lot of stress on her part since she couldn’t be here to meet with vendors in person.  

They selected one of my favorite venues, Chateau Elan.  The ceremony took place in the Atrium with reception to follow in the Debussy Ballroom.  It was the perfect setting!!

The Moore Agency performed their always-amazing hair styling and make-up application for all of the ladies.  Their team worked as the ladies enjoyed a delicious brunch complete with a Mimosa Bar making for a fun wedding morning. 

With a color palette of Tiffany, Black and Silver and plenty of glitz and glamour, the wedding vision came to life.  Chelsea Floral Designs expertly created the bride’s vision.  Megan had purchased many items along the way that she wanted to be incorporated into the wedding, so I presented them to David and Patrick of Chelsea Floral, who in turn took the items and used them in creative ways for one-of-a-kind stunning decor.  The hanging chandelier over the sweetheart table was breath-taking!

Catherine Rogers provided ceremony music on her harp. The sound was magical echoing throughout the Atrium of Chateau Elan.

Honeymoon Bakery created the wedding and Groom’s cake.  In perfect keeping with the Tiffany Blue theme, the pastry chef designed the wedding cake to look like Tiffany boxes.  The bride surprised the groom with an adorable groom’s cake paying homage to his participation in triathlons.

Marquee Events, DJ Matt, kept the crowd energized and on the dance floor throughout the evening.  Everyone had a fantastic time.

Joseph Leone of Leone Productions provided the videography service and did a great job of capturing the joy and excitement of the day.

Guests had a great time posing for photos in the photo booth provided by ShutterBooth.  

Special thanks to Katherine Birkbeck for sharing the gorgeous wedding photos included.  She was a true pleasure to work with and quite an artistic photographer!  I’m sure you will enjoy viewing the lovely images below!

Following many years of success in Atlanta, it is only fitting that I announce, with tremendous excitement, the expansion of Janice Blackmon Events into Florida. Wedding packages for both Sarasota and the Tampa Bay area have already been assembled and custom destinations are available upon request. Currently, the packages contain planning assistancephotography and vacation rental (subject to availability). Additional options are to come.

I have produced a number of weddings in Sarasota and to rave reviews. I look forward to continuing to offer these areas a higher level of event planning and production with my innovative ideas, creative design and flawless production of social celebrations. My vast experience and qualifications as an award-winning professional will re-energize social events and elevate the wedding and special events industry.  

Sarasota and the Tampa Bay area are popular destinations for weddings because of their temperate climates and world-class beaches. Unbeknownst to many, the area offers a plethora of stunning and cultural venues.  In addition to selecting your venue(s), we can arrange for all other necessary vendors to carry out your vision. When selecting a destination wedding, accommodations are always a main concern.  Imagine having a private home complete with a pool for your family or your bridal party to enjoy. Let us arrange transportation for your wedding party and family to and from the wedding ceremony and reception. A beach wedding at sunset is beautiful and can accommodate a variety of guest counts. From a small intimate celebration to a large festive party – both are possibilities. You may choose to have both your ceremony and reception on the beach or just your ceremony. Should you choose to have your reception at a venue, we are happy to determine the perfect place that suits your location and style. Whether it is a luxury hotel ballroom, a majestic art museum, the botanical garden, a historic home or a rustic setting amidst oak trees – the possibilities are endless. We are able to make your dream wedding a reality.

Our planning services include: 

Checklists:  A minimum of five checklists will be provided during the engagement period that will keep you on task with the details of your planning. These checklists will serve as a very useful tool to ensure all the details of the wedding are covered. We will assist with any details you desire and we will create a package that provides an appropriate amount of consulting/planning assistance. 

Vendor Meeting:  We will meet at your venue with key vendors to discuss the wedding day schedule and set-up. This ensures your vision is properly understood by all involved.  

Final Planning Meeting:  We will create a detailed and comprehensive Wedding Day Schedule prepared to your specifications.

Wedding Day Preparation and Scheduling:  The Wedding Day Schedule is comprised of information obtained during the Final Planning Meeting and Vendor Meeting. In addition to the schedule, your vendors will be provided the following confirmation documents: specific vendor itineraries, venue directions, a floor plan and contact information. We will also provide you a list of vendor balances due and suggested vendor gratuities.

Ceremony RehearsalWe will conduct your ceremony rehearsal the day before the wedding. If your ceremony site includes a wedding director, we will still be at the rehearsal to introduce ourselves to your wedding party, distribute the Wedding Party Itinerary’s and retrieve all of your essential wedding day accessories (toasting flutes, guest book, marriage license, rings, etc.). We will also obtain from you any wedding day payments and gratuities that will be distributed to your vendors on your wedding day.

Wedding Day Production: A minimum of two coordinators will be present on your wedding day to ensure timely wedding party preparedness for your special day. The duties that will be conducted include: ensure Bride is properly dressed with all accessories, coordination of pre and post ceremony pictures, set-up of ceremony items (unity candle, guest book, programs, card box), usher instruction on guest seating, orchestration of your wedding ceremony. We will be onsite throughout the reception, as well. Duties that will be covered include: oversee vendor arrival and set-up, ensure all of your accessories are displayed (guest book, toasting flutes, table assignment cards, place cards, menu cards, etc.) and cue all of the events at your reception (first dance, cake cutting, bouquet toss, etc.). We also work with all vendors onsite to ensure a smooth and flawless event by: cueing all activities and announcements, making sure dinner service is timely, instructing cake-cutting, advising those offering toasts, pampering the wedding couple throughout the reception and attending to any other needs the couple may have.  We will make sure all of your items are safely packed up at the end of the reception, as well. Our goal is to make sure that you and your family are the special guests at your wedding without having to worry about any of the details.

A.K. & Josh’s Gorgeous Destination Wedding!

Many times clients think that small weddings do not need to have a Planner – but this could not be further from the truth.  With a small/intimate wedding, your guests will notice every single aspect and detail much more so than with a larger wedding.  If something goes wrong, it will be much more noticeable.  Well, AK & Josh were different.  AK knew from the beginning that she needed a Planner and I couldn’t be more honored that she selected me. We had such fun planning the BIG DAY and seeing it all come together truly was a dream come true. 

AK & Josh have a very special kind of love ~ as many couples do ~ but their love story was like a fairy tale.  AK travels a lot for her job and so on one trip to New York, Josh came up to surprise her.  She arrived back to her hotel room to find one of those beautiful blue Tiffany boxes.  Inside was a gorgeous bracelet.  Later that evening, they had a delicious dinner and went for a horse and carriage ride.  Josh then popped the question and presented AK with one of the most gorgeous rings I have ever seen.

They selected one of my favorite venues for their intimate, destination wedding – the Ritz-Carlton Lodge at Reynolds Plantation. The service quality of the Ritz is unsurpassed.  From the moment you arrive, you are greeted by friendly, professional staff that make you immediately feel welcome.  Family and friends arrived from many locations to attend the wedding weekend where they were able to enjoy all that the Ritz Carlton Lodge has to offer in a luxurious, resort setting. 

The dress — ohhh the dress!!!! First of all, AK would look gorgeous in anything she put on, but the dress she selected from Buckhead Bridals by famed designer, Anne Barge (my favorite dress designer) looked as though it was designed specifically for her.  And not to be outdone, Josh donned a custom tailored tuxedo from Guffey’s of Atlanta menswear and he too looked handsome. 

I was so pleased to have my friend and photographer extraordinaire, Kristen Alexander, capture the beauty of this wedding.  She always amazes me with her creativity and sheer talent.  Just take a look at her photos below and you will see what I mean!

The vision for the wedding decor was classic elegance and JWilbur of EventScapes created a design that fully encapsulated that theme.  From the intimate ceremony setting with luscious whites, creams and green mixed in with candlelight to the breath-taking Estate Table design, this wedding was gorgeous!

The brides Grandmother unfortunately passed away shortly before the wedding, and so we decided to offer a tribute to her.  We had a table full of her photos where guests could view the life of this important person in AK’s life.  We also left an empty chair in the ceremony that we placed a small bouquet of pink roses {her favorite} on as well as her name in her memory.  AK carried an heirloom handkerchief with her grandmothers name embroidered on it as a personal remembrance.  It was a very touching tribute. 

Amati Chamber Ensemble provided the music for the ceremony.  They are always such a top-notch, talented group to work with.  Sarah goes above and beyond to assist clients in selecting the perfect music for their special celebration.  

After the ceremony, while Kristen was still working her magic with the camera, guests enjoyed cocktail hour with delicious morsels of food and refreshing beverages.  After AK and Josh made their grand entrance, guests enjoyed the impeccable dinner while mingling with the couple and offering their well wishes.  The couple desired for their celebration to be more of an elegant and intimate dinner party instead of a rowdy, noisy affair.  This enabled everyone to visit and reminisce throughout the celebration in a very relaxed atmosphere.  The evening was pure perfection!

We are always honored to be a part of our clients most special day!!!  We wish AK & Josh a lifetime of happiness!!
