Southern Wedding Etiquette…

Kim Jordan, our Atlanta area Sales Consultant/Event Planner is sharing her tips on Etiquette for Southern Weddings. If you have any specific questions, please reach out to us and we will be happy to answer them!

Even though our weddings look a lot different in 2020, there is still call for etiquette when planning for your big day.  Whether you are a Southern native or have family members who will attend your wedding in the South, everyone will likely appreciate the Southern etiquette that is displayed.  Good manners are always in style.

It all starts with the engagement.

By all means avoid broadcasting the news on social media until you have shared the exciting news with your family and friends.  People you are close to should be told before the news is public knowledge.

Don’t say congratulations to a newly engaged bride.  Although it seems like the most common and normal thing to say, it implies that the girl is the lucky one for being proposed to.  Southern girls KNOW it is the guy who is the lucky one that the girl said yes.  Extend Best Wishes or I Am Very Happy for You, instead.

Guests typically do not bring gifts to engagement parties.  This party is meant to celebrate and be excited for the couple.  And, of course, to see the ring!  The small gifts that some guests may bring (like champagne flutes) will not be opened at the party.

The bridal shower (typically a luncheon) can be hosted by anyone from bridesmaids, to the mother of the bride or the mother of the groom, Aunts or best friends of the family.  The guest list should include only guests who are also invited to the wedding.

The gifts given at a shower are very different and certainly not the same as the wedding gift. Functional and practical gifts for the shower are selected to begin a new home.  A coffee maker, or monogrammed towels are appropriate.  The gifts would be on display in a different section of the bride’s childhood home.  Viewing of the displayed gifts is common with the shower gifts where they would be laid out in the basement rec room or guest bedroom.  Wedding gifts, however, would be on full display in the front living room, dining room or library.

The gifts for the wedding were very special and what the bride covets and has selected for herself.  These gifts are usually chosen from the bridal registry of sterling silver flatware (monogrammed, of course), crystal pieces and the fine china pattern place settings.  Please note that everyday china can go either way for a shower or wedding gift, especially entire place settings or serving pieces are appropriate.

The rehearsal dinner is traditionally hosted by the groom’s family who also pays for it.  The guest list should, however, be discussed with the bride’s family.  This dinner should be a close-knit event for wedding participants and family only.

Back in the bygone days of the very proper planning of a wedding, it was typically done by the mother of the bride with very particular “rules” to follow.

Always send in your RSVP to the wedding in a punctual manner.  This will relieve unnecessary stress on the bride and mother of the bride when planning who and how many will be in attendance for seating purposes and how much food should be ordered. Don’t bring children or babies to a wedding unless they are specifically invited.  If they are not on the invitation, they are not invited!  Enough said!

Likewise, if an invitation does not include a noted plus one, then a plus one is not invited either.

Don’t wear white to a wedding unless you are the bride.  She is the only one that should wear white on her big day.

Don’t bring a wedding present to the wedding.  Have it sent to the bride’s home for safe keeping and for the bride to display once it is opened.

Always be 15 minutes early to get seated for the ceremony.  You do not want to be late, arrive at the same time as the bride, or have the doors closed and miss the ceremony altogether.

Early is on time, on time is late, and late is unacceptable.

Traditionally a Southern groom will pick his father to be his best man and stand at his side.  After all, he thinks his daddy is the best and therefore the Best Man for the job.  Nowadays, it is common for a groom to select his best friend or fraternity brother to stand at the altar with him.

Cousins on both sides of the family are typically asked to be bridesmaids or groomsmen.

The Aunts are in charge of the cake knife, after the bride and groom have cut their first piece, to serve the sliced cake to the guests. {Except for our clients where we take care of the cake knife and server – so even Aunt Sally and Aunt Mary can enjoy the celebration}.

Another Southern tradition is Cake Pulls. This is where small charms attached to ribbons are placed within the cake. The bride, and her bridesmaids will each pull a ribbon, and the charm depicts something special for that person. The one that pulls the wedding related charm, is said to be the next to get married. The charms are typically a gift from a relative and given to the bride at her Bridal Shower.

The punch would be served by the friends of the bride’s family if a caterer was not employed.  The wedding punch would be the same color as the bridesmaids’ dresses.  Common now at cocktail hour is the signature drink that can be customized to fit the color scheme.

As far as dietary etiquette goes, a gracious hostess will always try to accommodate the guests and their needs.  Ultimately, though, a thoughtful guest will confidentially communicate any bona fide food allergy, religious, or medically necessary diet restrictions prior to the event or when the RSVP is sent in.  A guest should also consider eating before the event to avoid any awkward conversations around eating habits either with the hostess or with other guests.  A good rule of thumb to remember is that the hostess picks the menu, but your company and spending time together is the focus.

A lot of times expect to be at a Southern wedding celebration for an entire weekend.  Kick off usually begins with the welcome get together for out of town guests.  The ceremony and reception are next.  The day after the big day there may be a brunch for those in town, that may or may not include the bride and groom, if they have already departed for their honeymoon.

Thank you notes.  Should always be handwritten and never emblazoned with the words Thank you printed on the front.  The note card is informal in white or ivory paper with the full name of the writer embossed or engraved on the front of the folded note paper. These should be received within three months of your wedding day.

Back in the day, Southern etiquette was taken very seriously, especially for weddings.  It is all about being courteous and respectful of the bride and her family.  And we here at Janice Blackmon Events feel that etiquette never goes out of style!

Cecilia & Ben’s Spectacular Day!

Posted in Weddings tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , at 9:00 am by JBEvents

I am one of the lucky Event Planner’s, because I have fabulous clients!!!! Cecilia & Ben are certainly part of that group. We had a great time planning their wedding and the result was – well you can see for yourself. A good time was had by all! This couple exudes love and happiness which you can see by the expressions on their faces and the way they interact together.

Capturing the beauty of the day was none other than Kristen Alexander and the also amazing Jonathan Nye of Cre8ive Video.

Huge shout out to Kim Jordan of Woodruff Arts Center for referring this wonderful couple to me! Thank you so much! It was a pleasure working with Kim to make sure all of the venue details were expertly handled. Kim was even able to get special permission for photos of the whole wedding party to be taken in the High Museum since it was raining and photos couldn’t be taken outside. Woodruff Arts Center is a beautiful place for weddings and corporate events.

Christopher Macksey of Topher Mack, created the stunning floral. The phalaenopsis orchids were amazing. The whole design aspect was unique with a classic, modern and sleek style – perfect for this couple! They also provided light walls out on the terrace which gave a very interesting focal decor piece. Guests enjoyed taking selfies there throughout the evening.

Brad and the Livin Large band kept the crowd entertained and on the dance floor all night.

The beautiful cake was from Sweet Creations by Candi. The ombre sugar paste flowers were spectacular!

Adding to the fun of the evening, the couple provided masquerade masks for guests to wear while they danced the night away! This was a huge hit!! It was entertaining watching guests select their mask with such care, and then taking on somewhat of a different persona out on the dance floor.

It was an amazing day, despite the rain. Cecilia and Ben didn’t let the raindrops stop them from having a fabulous and flawless wedding.

We wish them a lifetime of happiness and adventures!!

So, my fantastic team, not only had a million tasks related to the wedding, they also had to assist me in getting around. I can never thank them enough for always giving a 100% to ensure my client is ecstatic with how the wedding/event turned out, but also being there for me!

Ali and Conner’s Special Day!

Posted in Weddings tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , at 7:35 am by JBEvents

One of the highest compliments and truly an honor that we can receive is to be referred by a previous client!  We absolutely love referrals and this couple was no exception!!!  Ali and Conner were referred from a previous client (Thank you Karyn & Shelby), and we are so happy to have them as a part of the JBEvents family!

The couple selected Little River Farms as the venue for their wedding!  The venue, located in Milton, GA., sits on a beautiful piece of land beside a lake.  There are a couple of options for where to have your ceremony on the property.  Ali and Conner chose the vineyard.  A partially enclosed Pavilion offers a great place for the reception, while inside the house was perfect for Cocktail Hour as well as a respite for those that wanted to find a quiet place to sit and have a conversation.

Capturing the beautiful images of the day was Kaylan Bradley of Happy Everything Co.  Thank you so much for not only capturing beautiful images, but also for sharing them!

The bride wore a stunning fit and flare gown designed by Essence of Australia.  Ali looked like a living doll!

Before the ceremony, the couple shared letters they had written each other which is always such a sweet moment.  But Conner also gave Ali a framed hand-made sign that read “Together 2704 days, and I have loved you since day 1!” If I’m being honest, that brought a tear or two to my eyes!  What a sweet gesture – and when you see this couple together, you absolutely feel the love.

One of my favorite parts of planning is the event design and decor component.  Ali and Conner wanted an elegant, rustic design theme, and JWilbur of EventScapes perfectly combined a rustic approach with a unique and elegant design.

The ceremony took place in the vineyard.  The couple exchanged their vows standing in front of a stunning arbor graced with soft fabrics, clusters of flowers holding back the drapery and floral blooms hanging in individual small glass bottles.  The finished product was gorgeous! Rev. Rodney Hunt officiated the ceremony.  The couple wrote their vows and I dare say there wasn’t a dry eye.

A unique part of the ceremony was the wine ceremony.  This is a type of unity ceremony that is a take on the traditional lighting of the unity candle.  In this type of ceremony, the couple each takes a vessel of wine (1 red, 1 white) and pours them into one glass.  Once the wines are poured together, they can’t be separated, which is the whole concept of a wedding ceremony uniting a couple.  They couple then each took a sip of the combined wine as a symbol of fully becoming one.

A custom design was created for the Estate Table.  A 35+ foot structure was created along the Estate Table to allow EventScapes to create a suspended look with glass bubbles and candlelight.  They further enhanced the setting  with accents of flowers of the day and greenery.  Along the table itself was loose eucalyptus and votive candles along with a series of vases for the bridesmaids bouquets.

The guest tables had a variety of styles of designs.  Some were lanterns enhanced with moss and rose petals, while others had an eclectic collection of vases each filled with flowers of the day.  All of the designs were surrounded by votive candles offering a flickering elegance.

Guests enjoyed a delicious dinner prepared by Talk of the Town caterers.  Topped off with a delectable wedding cake by Cake Envy.

DJ Lou, of Spectrum Entertainment kept the guests on the dance floor partying all night long!!

WedFlix was on hand to create a lasting video memory of the special day.

As a late night snack, guests enjoyed a popcorn bar complete with all the fixings!

We were thrilled to be a part of Ali and Conner’s amazing day!  We wish them a lifetime of happiness!!!!!

In case you still want more, check out their video trailer!

Meghan and Matt’s Spectacular Day!

Posted in Weddings tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , at 7:25 am by JBEvents

I am so thankful that I have been blessed with some of the greatest clients around.  In the list of great clients, Meghan and Matt are right at the top!

This adorable couple has a very busy life and they realized that they needed help with putting their wedding plans together and I was honored to be their Planner. Special thanks go to David Clarke of Chelsea Floral Designs for the referral!!

The bride’s style was classic, traditional and elegant.  Her color palette was Navy and Peach.  Her dress , from Winnie Couture, was a beautiful lace, fit and flare dress with cap sleeves, v-neck and sheer back.  Meghan looked stunning.

The bridesmaids wore elegant navy dresses with a one-shoulder strap.

The Groom and his groomsmen looked dapper in blue tuxedos with a slight difference of the groom’s being a deep navy while the guys were a brighter shade of blue.

The ceremony was held at Redeemer Lutheran church while the reception was held at the Georgian Terrace Hotel.

Hair and Make-up for the ladies was provided by The Moore Agency.  They all looked so pretty.

A very touching moment was when the Father of the Bride saw his daughter for the first time.  She presented him with a hand-embroidered handkerchief that I’m sure will be a keepsake forever!

Chelsea Floral Designs created the gorgeous floral arrangements.  The bouquets were swoon-worthy.  Megan’s bouquet had a special touch,  part of her mother’s wedding dress was wrapped around the stems.

The amazing Laura Stone captured the day with her talented and artistic eye.  She has such an easy way with clients, that they feel at ease and comfortable, allowing her to capture the beauty and emotion of the day!  Her images will undoubtedly allow the couple, their family and friends to relive the the special day filled with love and joy for years to come.

Guests enjoyed Cocktail Hour in Livingston’s Bar at the Georgian Terrace Hotel, with tasty hors d’oeuvres and refreshing beverages before entering the Grand Ballroom for the dinner and reception.

DJ Eric Anthony was on hand keeping the party going and the dance floor full!

Thank you Meghan and Matt for allowing me the honor and privilege of planning and producing your special day.  I wish you both a lifetime of happiness!!!!

Enjoy these images from Laura Stone!

I took a few photos during the day too……the ones of the cake were because of how the ceremonial cutting had a tiny issue.  If you look at the professional photos of the couple cutting the cake, you’ll see they are laughing and then look closely at the Groom holding the plate up and you will see the slice of cake was a bit of a mess.  I had to take a photo of the end result of the cutting.  I LOVE that they had a good time with the messy cutting – which just goes to show what a fun couple they were to work with!!!

Elise & Michael’s BIG DAY!

Posted in Weddings tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , at 9:15 am by JBEvents

Sometimes, the star’s align and two people make the decision that was long in coming, to get married.  When Elise & Michael made that decision, one of the first things they did was hire me.  We spent quite a bit of time selecting a venue, but after much deliberation and site-visits, they decided on Chateau Elan!

Once the venue was selected, we moved on to selecting the other vendors to be a part of their BIG DAY!  {See full list below!}

I’ve said it a million times, every wedding (or special occasion), should be unique to the couple (person, business, etc.).  There are many ways to accomplish this, but it all starts out with being true to who you are, what means the most to you and allowing the professionals to do our job to bring that vision to life! For this couple, it was the blending of their love for geeky things with an elegant touch.

It’s no secret that Chateau Elan is one of my favorite venues, because no matter where on the property you have your wedding, it will be wonderful.  With Elise & Michael, we wanted something a little different.  The ceremony took place in the Atrium, which is gorgeous in its own right, but when you add in draping, and a ceremony arch with lush flowers and an aisle treatment with soft touches of color – you have a dream-like setting.

The location for the reception was the Winery Pavilion.  Now, with this selection, there were a few things that the couple didn’t like about the venue, biggest being the 80′ long mural on the back wall. So, the decision was made to drape it.  Calling on the always fabulous creative of JWilbur of EventScapes, he did just that and created a completely different look and feel of the pavilion.  Also, instead of the ceiling fan lights – which aren’t elegant, or in line with the desired look,  Wilbur and his team hung beautiful crystal chandeliers.

AFTER

One of the ways that the couple brought their own, unique style to the reception was with the Groom’s cake which was a replica of the Dungeons and Dragons Handbook.  Mark Lotti, Classic Cheesecakes and Cakes, did a fantastic job creating the cake.  He also made the beautiful and delicious wedding cake! Mark never disappoints and the degree of his attention to detail is remarkable!!!!

The Moore Agency was on hand to make all of the ladies even more beautiful than they already were.  While hair and make-up services were being provided, the ladies enjoyed some delicious bites and tasty beverages in their suite.

Meanwhile, the guys had a fun and filling lunch at Paddy’s Restaurant and Bar onsite at the resort!!

Ceremony, Cocktail Hour, Dinner and Reception music was provided by the all-talented, Jeni Michelson!  For the ceremony and cocktail hour, Jeni treated the guests to beautiful renditions on the keyboard – adding in her tantalizing vocals for the cocktail hour.  During the reception, she switched over to DJ and kept the crowd dancing throughout the evening!

Everyone had a blast in the photo booth! ShutterBooth provided a fun, interactive experience where guests were able to create a lasting memory of the wedding for the happy couple as well a having a memento of the special day to take away!

Michelle Landreau captured the gorgeous images throughout the day.  Her easy style makes for a comfortable atmosphere for the couple, which in turn creates images that capture the emotion and beauty of the day!  Thank you Michelle for sharing these images with us!

Jonathan Nye, of Cre8tive Cinema, was onsite creating a film of all of the details and special moments of the day.  He is always such a pleasure to work with, and his talent is top-notch! I’ve included his teaser film down below the photos!

As promised, here is the link to the teaser film by Jonathan of Cre8tive Cinema.

Cinderella marries her Prince Charming…AKA Jessica & Rocky get married!

Posted in Weddings tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , at 12:41 pm by JBEvents

This truly is one of the most special weddings I have ever planned and produced, because it’s was for my oldest daughter!

I did some blogging throughout the planning process {“From Planner to MOB”} if you want to read about some of the process along the way, and I admit, I didn’t ever get to the post about her bridal shower, but maybe one of these days I’ll get that one up too.

But, let’s talk about the wedding!!!!

The original plan/desire was to have a small wedding on the beach in Sarasota, however, after considering all of the details and logistics Jessica & Rocky decided to get married here in Georgia at their church.  One of the things that meant so much to me was that they wanted a venue that held meaning to them and honestly, that makes so much sense.  I admired them for feeling this way and I think choosing their church was the perfect choice!

Once the venue and date were set, the next step was to solidify the theme.  They wanted an elegant but somewhere between vintage and shabby/chic vibe.  I immediately began scouring antique and thrift stores buying up all of the milk glass I could find, along with tons of different styles of votive holders and crystal candlesticks.  Jessica had some ideas of certain items she wanted such as an old suitcase for a card holder and another suitcase for the cake plateau.  I found a couple of old suitcases that we refurbished and we were really happy with how they turned out! {All of these items are now available for rent.  Contact us for information.}

Their colors were navy, deep coral and metallic gold.  The girls wore navy dresses and the guys wore navy tuxes with coral accents. They all looked so nice.

The Ring Bearer was the cutest one ever!!!!!!!!! And the two Flower Girls were absolutely adorable!!!!

We knew with having Kristen Alexander as our photographer we were going to get fantastic, artistic and creative images – and she did not disappoint.  Her calm demeanor and laid-back vibe and doing whatever it takes to get jaw-dropping images is incomparable.  Her style to create lasting memories of classic photographs in a unique way is just one of the many reasons I refer my clients to her.

EventScapes Atlanta took a dark and warehousey feel of the church and made it look elegant.  The ceremony backdrop which then became the cake backdrop was gorgeous! I loved the centerpieces created in the milk glass vases.  The room looked beautiful.

Speaking of the cake, Oh-mmm-gee!!!  Mark Lotti created a design that was gorgeous and perfect.  Jessica and Rocky met with him and gave a few ideas and he came up with exactly what they wanted but weren’t able to put into words.  It’s no surprise that Mark is my go-to guy for my clients, because not only does he create amazing designs, but the cakes taste even better (and that’s saying A LOT).

There were so many special details that were a part of the day such as Jessica’s uncle, my brother, walking her down the aisle and since her dad did not attend the wedding, she danced with her son (my precious Nanababy) instead of having  Father/Daughter dance.  It was adorable! The groom’s step-father officiated the wedding, which was so special.  It was also important to the couple to remember the family members who have passed away, so we had a memory table with photos of those special people.

Instead of a traditional guest book, the couple instead had guests sign a Bible and asked them to highlight their favorite verse or leave words of encouragement.  What a keepsake that is!

Guests had a blast with the Photo Booth provided by ShutterBooth Atlanta.  They always do such a fabulous job.  Their equipment is top-notch and their Hosts are fun and interactive.

The vendors {friendors} that worked with us were amazing!!!!  They all outdid themselves and I (and my daughter and son-in-law) are eternally grateful.

I have to give a special SHOUT OUT to my team, Victoria and Donna!  Although I did all of the planning, schedules, vendor confirmation, etc., they took over to produce the wedding so that I could actually enjoy being the Mother of the Bride.  I have always said that I have the best and most hard-working associates of any planning firm around, and being able to experience their work and service first-hand, I am even more certain!

Wishing Jessica & Rocky a lifetime of happiness!!!!!!!!

Next in the Series….From Planner to MOB!!

Posted in Planning Tips and Information, Weddings tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , at 9:04 am by JBEvents

Continuing the series “From Planner to MOB” takes us now to what has transpired since the last post.

Quick recap of where we are — Officially engaged, bridal party selected, dress purchased, venue selected, invitations ordered, caterer selected…!

We have also determined the date and confirmed the venue.  The wedding will be in March {yikes less than 2 months}!  As I mentioned in the first post, originally, my daughter, Jessica, wanted to get married in Sarasota, FL at the beach. Aside from spending so much time there growing up, she was really considering that location because the relationship between she and Rocky blossomed there.  However, after much discussion we determined that it would be best to have the wedding here in the Atlanta area, so the search began.  We considered a variety of venues, but in searching their hearts, they truly wanted to choose a location that had meaning for both of them, so the decision was made to have the wedding at our church.  I admire that they came to the conclusion that the wedding should take place in a significant place rather than just a random venue.

The groom and groomsmen have selected their tuxes and it seems that the bridesmaids dresses have been decided upon as well.  That was a HUGE decision.

Now from the design perspective, our church doesn’t offer a “beautiful” background like many traditional churches, so my mind is filled with ideas of how to soften the look and make it look more weddingish.

Since the color palette and theme has been selected, I have accumulated a large supply of vases, containers as well as other decor items.  It’s been like a treasure hunt and it’s interesting where you can find perfect pieces!  I am so excited to pull it all together and then to see the final product.  There are some DIY projects that we will be working on to create just the look we want, so I’m sure that will provide a few fun stories to share.  :o)

Sneak Peek at a SMALL sampling of some of my “treasures”

Vendor selection is well underway and we are super excited about the Team that will be executing our vision!! Keep following as I will be doing a vendor Spotlight on each of them.

Jessica & Rocky are currently working on vows and music selections…..which has turned into a massive undertaking  – but they are making good progress.

They had their Engagement Photos (Michelle Pratt of Elephants and Apples) which turned out great.

The Bridal Shower will be held later this month hosted by her Matron and Maid of Honor.  We are both so excited for that celebration. The invitations are adorable.

Tune in next time for an update on our next steps and a recap of the shower and other details.
