Memorial Day….Remembering the fallen!

Memorial Day – known as the official start of summer.  Now I’ve always known that the holiday is set aside for honoring those who have served and lost their lives in service to this country, but honestly, aside from having a passing thought, it wasn’t what I “celebrated”.  That is, until this year.

My youngest daughter is a flight attendant and just so happened to have an Atlanta overnight Friday.  This was extremely special as that was the same day my first grandson graduated from Kindergarten!  It was a double bonus to get to go to his school program AND then get to have my daughter come home for the evening.  My grandson LOVES to go to the airport with me to pick up his Auntie A, and so, Friday was no exception.  We made our way to the airport and although her flight had already landed by the time we arrived, we knew we had to wait until she was off the plane-train before we could move up to the baggage claim area to pick her up.  We sat in the cell lot and watched planes taxi and take-off and just enjoyed that time.  I started thinking it was taking her longer than normal to call and say she was off the train and we could begin making our way to get her.  Well, there was a very good reason.

I got a text message from her, and while I expected it to say we could come get her, it instead was a series of photos she took of the plane that was next to hers as a fallen soldier was being taken off of the plane.  Seeing those images, and especially on Memorial Day weekend, was sobering.  I looked at the photos and my eyes filled with tears as the pomp and circumstance of the military procedure of removing the casket from the plane was captured by her camera. She said it was completely silent all around her as passengers, crew and airport personnel stopped while this soldier’s body was unloaded from the plane to be taken to his/her family and final resting place.

This was a huge reminder of why we set aside a day to honor all of those that sacrificed their lives for our safety and freedom.  This country has a lot of problems and issues, and we get so wrapped up in the bi-partisan rhetoric that we lose sight of the fact that as a country we are FREE.  The price to be free has been paid by many.  The men and women that through the years have left their friends and family behind to be of service to their country, deserve to be honored.  Those that lost their lives while doing so, deserve to be honored even more so.  They deserve more than one day set-aside as we get a day off work.  They gave the ultimate sacrifice.  Many never to return home to their friends and family.  Children that didn’t get to grow up with them, parents that had to raise a family alone, parents that spent every day looking forward to their son or daughter returning home, safely, never to do so.

My own father fought in WWII in the Navy.  It was something he was always so proud of doing.  While he didn’t lose his life while serving, many during that time weren’t so lucky.  Since that time, many more men and women lost their lives while serving their country.

Regardless of your views, political party, race, color, economic status, age, or sex, we should all thank those that selflessly give of themselves so that we all can live in a country that has so much to be thankful for.  We are the Land of the Free, because of the Brave!

We don’t know who the fallen soldier was that had their last flight ending in Atlanta, Georgia on Friday, May 24th, but I can tell you this, my heart goes out to their family and my view of Memorial Day is certainly different this year.  I hope that each of us take time  during this weekend to stop and remember all of those amazing people that gave of themselves for us.

A Special Simcha for a Special Family

It was truly an honor and a privilege to plan and produce the second Mitzvah celebration for this amazing family!  There are just some times that you really click with a client and throughout the process you develop a friendship.  That was the case with this sweet family.  Three years ago I worked with this family on their daughters Bat Mitzvah and now the youngest of the family, Daniel is celebrating his Bar Mitzvah!

We selected the InterContinental Hotel as the venue, which was perfect because many of the family members live not only out of state, but out of the country.  The Hotel would be home away from home while the family came to celebrate this special time.

Let me just talk about family for a moment.  The love that this family has for each other, and actively shows, makes my heart smile.  The siblings are each others biggest supporters and the connection between them is something that you can feel whenever you are around them.  The entire family – immediate and extended – share a love that just makes you feel happy to see it expressed!

The photos below, compliments of the always fabulous, Kristen Alexander, will tell the story for me, but I want to provide just a few details.  

Instead of a full-on theme for the celebration, a color palette was selected.  The honoree’s favorite Soccer team is Barcelona, so their team colors of burgundy, blue and yellow were the basis of the decor. 

For the Kiddush luncheon, we went with a palette of black and white striped linens, paired with yellow and white flowers.  It was a very crisp and clean look.

For the evening party, we paired a contemporary design concept with organic touches for a truly unique and elevated look.  Bringing the concepts and design together was the creative genius of JWilbur of EventScapes.  

One of my favorite parts of a Mitzvah is the candle lighting ceremony.  Hearing the honoree honor their family and friends is touching and inspiring. 

For this party, if you had a sweet-tooth, then you would have been in heaven.  After a delicious dinner, guests were invited out to the garden terrace for mini cupcakes, fresh made hot doughnuts with a variety of toppings and an ice cream bar.  

And if those sweets weren’t enough, then how about a candy buffet featuring Daniel’s favorite treats.

Guests received a commemorative T-shirt as a lasting reminder of the special occasion. 

Now that all of the kid’s in the family have celebrated their Mitzvah’s, we look forward to continued celebrations like weddings, with this wonderful family in the future.

Happy 4th of July!!

The 4th of July has always been one of my favorite holiday’s.  Summertime, friends, good food and fireworks is the perfect combination for a fun time.  

Some of my fondest memories are from my late teen’s and early 20’s when a friend of mine and I would get a hotel room with a view overlooking the Sarasota Bay and have a few friends over to celebrate the 4th of July and watch the fireworks.  

The 4th of July tends to lend itself to being a great time for gathering with friends.  Barbecues or low country boils are popular themes.  Having activities for the kids as well as games for kids and adults is sure to bring out the competitive spirit in everyone.  The decor for your party can be very simple to elaborate, but having refreshing beverages and yummy food to nosh on are key.  You can get some ideas on my 4th of July Pinterest board.

If you don’t want to host a party at your home, there are many other local attractions that you can attend.  Getting a group together to go watch fireworks is still a favorite activity of mine.  Grab some cold beverages and snacks and put them in a cooler, take sparklers, glow sticks or poppers for the gang to celebrate with while waiting for the show to begin.  Don’t forget to pack the bug spray to keep those pesky little heathens from eating YOU as their snack.  :o)

 No matter how you celebrate, remember the freedoms our Country was built on, which have not come without sacrifice.  These words need to remembered not only on Independence Day, but everyday!

Wedding Budget Tips

You just got engaged and are excited about beginning all of the plans for the wedding.  It’s easy to get carried away with all of the ideas that are going through your head – however, two of the main concerns you need to determine early on is the dreaded, BUDGET and the Guest List!

The budget will dictate the decisions that will be made and it directly impacts the Guest List.

Each person you include on your Guest List has an associated dollar amount connected to them.  That is why it is important to thoroughly vet your Guest List.  Generally the couple and their parents will create the guest list based upon who they feel should be invited.  There is always the “Must Invite” list but many times my clients will create a “B” and even a “C” list.  While it’s usually true that not every guest you invite will attend, you must consider the possibility that they will.  It’s also important to note that if you want to send out Save the Dates, whomever you send them to MUST be sent a wedding invitation, So if you have a “B” and/or “C” list, you need to take that into consideration.   Here’s a good infographic of how to determine your Guest List.

Once you have the draft of your Guest List, then you can begin searching for a venue (or let us do that legwork for you).  One of the first questions a venue will ask is, what is your estimated guest count, so that’s why it’s important to work on the Guest List first. Venues have a maximum capacity for their event space, so the estimated Guest count has to be considered to determine the appropriate space for your celebration.

Venue Spotlight ~ Selby Gardens in Sarasota, Florida

When planning a wedding or any social celebration, selecting the venue is key.  We assist our clients in determining the perfect venue for them by asking many questions to include among others, anticipated guest count as well as their vision of the theme and atmosphere. When it comes to weddings and social celebrations in Sarasota, there are so many options of venues available, from luxury hotels to historic homes, art museums, botanical gardens or of course, the beautiful beaches.

Weddings may be held anywhere throughout the Gardens. The most popular locations are the Schimmel Wedding Lawn and Pavilion, the Gazebo, the Banyan Grove, and The Wedding Oak adjacent to the Christy Payne Mansion. Additional areas that lend themselves to nuptial celebrations are the Great Room by the Bay indoors or outdoors at the Christy Payne Mansion.

Renovations have been underway at the Gardens, but are estimated to be complete by the first part of October which will also include an option for wedding party’s to arrive by boat on the south lawn side. 

The south lawn includes the Gazebo, Children’s Playground, and cocktail area looking over the bay, as well as a dance floor/seating area. This area can accommodate 250+ for a seated event.   There is not a backup plan on this side when it comes to weather, so usually a tent is booked. 

The Great Room by the Bay is smaller, consisting of 3600 square feet, however, for an indoor event it has a lot to offer. There is a large bay view, terrace for band or DJ, and the “wedding oak” which is picturesque for ceremony backdrop.

Happy 4th of July!!!

We are less than a week away from one of my favorite Holiday’s, the 4th of July!  The 4th has always held a special place in my heart and remembering back to my teenage and young adult years, I LOVED spending the 4th at Island Park in Sarasota.  There would be a festival taking place all day and then fireworks would be shot off over the bay at dark.  Being with friends celebrating the Holiday made the day all the more special.  When my daughters were young, we would usually spend the 4th with my brother in Orlando.  We would always have a cookout with a group of friends, hang out in the pool and even be able to see Disney’s fireworks from there.  It always seemed magical.  Although I’m not in Sarasota or Orlando this year, I do plan on celebrating locally with friends and family and look forward to watching fireworks to bring the special day to a close.

DIY, Pinterest and Stress…What they have in common!

Since the inception of Pinterest, I have seen a rise in the level of stress my clients endure in the planning of their wedding or special event.  While we can effectively use Pinterest as well as other sources for inspiration it should not be used to create a “must have” for every image or item shown.

Creating storyboards for clients has been a longstanding method of organizing ideas and visions, however, with many clients living out-of-state from their Planner and other vendors, sharing that board became increasingly difficult.  With Pinterest though, it is an easy process to create a “secret” Wedding Board and share it with only those involved to kick ideas back and forth.  I have used this process with clients to share specific ideas for colors, designs, attire, favors, etc., as well as for those who were having a difficult time narrowing down their specific vision.  Collecting images of various decor components that indicate potential ideas is helpful just as much as indicating styles and ideas that the client doesn’t like.  By determining ideas of interest a more streamlined and detailed outline can be made for the cohesive theme of the event.

I encourage my clients to share their ideas with me and I love working with them to develop the branding of their event.  While using images as an inspiration, I always recommend putting a unique touch to the overall idea so that it is not just a copy of someone else’s design.  Each client is unique and so their event should also be unique.  One such example of this was the following image that was provided as something the bride LOVED.  I then took that image and worked with the floral designer (Chelsea Floral Design Studio) to create a similar look while staying within the budget and style of the other decor being used. The end result was gorgeous and my client was overjoyed.

We have discussed some good ideas of how to use Pinterest, but there is also a down side.  This is where the stress comes in!  Finding images of tons of ideas you would like to incorporate and thinking that you must have every single one.  Now, I agree that there are some ideas that you find that would be excellent to incorporate, but just don’t go overboard.  With every idea comes time and money.  Both of which are considered a budget item.  Trying to create or provide every little detail you see will not only create stress, but it can also take away from the overall design and feel of the event.  Remember, keeping things cohesive is what makes an event truly stand out.

Happy Valentine’s Day!!!

In just a few days, we will be celebrating the most romantic Holiday of the year – Valentine’s Day!  If you are wondering what you can do for your sweetie that would be fun, romantic and special, I would like to offer a few ideas.

The day of love, when we celebrate with hearts and chocolates with the special person in our lives – or if you are single, we call this Single Awareness Day.  Regardless, you can’t go into any store without seeing heart-shaped boxes of chocolates, Teddy Bears, bouquets of roses and greeting cards espousing words of love.  But you may be wondering what you could do for the one you love that might be a little more personal, special or different.

For the most personal and special, try writing a love letter to your significant other.  Rather than purchasing a card with verses created from the pen of a stranger, write your own instead.  You don’t have to be a poet, just write from the heart.  This makes the words more special because it’s personal and shows that you took the time to think it through and say things that you might not have ever said.

There is always the option of going out for dinner – whether to your favorite restaurant or to one you’ve always wanted to try.  Since many people will have that same idea, you may have a long wait if you didn’t make reservations.  Instead of going out, you could make dinner at home.  Now I realize this may not sound romantic or even fun, but you can make it special.  Select a menu consisting of items that the two of you can make together.  Pour a glass of wine, put on some music and share the tasks for preparing the delicious meal.  Or, for an extra special meal that is created using some amazing products from my favorite specialty Olive Oil and Balsamic Vinegar store, Branch and Vine, try out the recipes below created by store owner, Tracey Jenkins.  You can purchase many of the products in the recipes at Branch and Vine located in Newnan and Peachtree City.  

Chipotle-Serrano Rib-Eye Steaks

Ingredients :

Four  8-10 oz. Rib-eye steaks

1/2 cup Branch & Vine Serrano Honey Vinegar

1/2 cup Branch & Vine Chipotle Olive Oil

1 Tbsp. h.e.r.b Steakhouse Seasoning (available at Branch & Vine)

Directions

Combine vinegar and Steakhouse Seasoning. Slowly whisk in olive oil.  Place steak in a zip lock bag or in a single layer non-reactive pan or container. Pour the marinade over the streaks and massage marinade into steaks. Cover and refrigerate, allow in marinate for a minimum of 2 hours or up to 6 hours.

Prepare a medium charcoal or gas grill and cook to desired doneness. Allow to rest for ten minutes before serving.

Serves 4. (The left-overs will be great the next day)

Asiago & Truffle Mashed Potatoes

Ingedients :
3 pounds Yukon Gold (or red skinned) potatoes, unpeeled
1 Tbsp Branch & Vine Butter Flavored Olive Oil
2 Tbsp Branch & Vine Garlic Infused Olive Oil
2 Tbsp unsalted butter
1 medium clove garlic
1/2 cup half & half, plus extra if needed  (low or no-fat is ok)
1/2 tablespoon Branch & Vine Black Truffle Oil
1/2 cup freshly grated Asiago Cheese, plus a little for finishing sprinkle
1 Tbsp Pacific Ocean Sea Salt (for boiling water) (available at Branch & Vine)                   
Sel Gris or Pink Himalayan s.a.l.t. & (available at Branch & Vine)  / fresh cracked black pepper to taste
Optional:  Finely chopped, fresh flat leaf parsley for garnish

Dice potatoes, making sure all are relatively the same size.  Place in a large saucepan add the Pacific Ocean salt, and cover with hot water.  Bring to a boil over medium-high heat and then reduce heat to maintain a rolling boil.  Cook until potatoes are tender throughout when poked with a fork.  Heat the half-and-half, oil, butter and the garlic in a medium saucepan over medium heat until simmering, watching carefully so it doesn’t scorch.  Remove from heat and set aside.  Remove the potatoes from the heat and drain off the water.  Mash and add the garlic-cream-butter mixture, grated Asiago and truffle oil.  Stir to combine, adding extra half & half if too dry.  Salt and pepper to taste.  Let stand for 5 minutes so that mixture thickens.  When ready to serve, drizzle extra olive oil over the top and sprinkle with grated Asiago and fresh parsley for garnish.

 

 Asparagus with Roasted Tomatoes, Balsamic Reduction and Goat Cheese

Ingredients :
1 lb fresh asparagus, washed and tough ends removed
1 pk grape tomatoes, 1/2 cut in half lengthwise  and leave other 1/2 whole
2 Tbsp + 2 Tbsp Branch & Vine Garlic Infused Olive Oil  (could also use Branch & Vine’s Lemon or Persian Lime Oils)
1 tsp + 1tsp Fleur de Sel or Sel Gris s.a.l.t. (available at Branch & Vine)
Mild goat cheese  (can sub with feta if you like it beta)
freshly ground pepper to taste
3/4 cup Branch & Vine Serrano-Honey Vinegar, reduced by 1/2   (you can substitute with several others, such as Traditional)
Directions
  • Preheat oven to 300F.
  • In small mixing bowl, toss whole tomatoes, 1 Tbsp Olive, 1/2 tsp s.a.l.t. and a sprinkle of pepper to coat well.  Pour tomatoes onto parchment paper lined baking sheet (make sure to get all the oil too!)  Bake at 300 degrees for approx 30-40 minutes. You want them blistered slightly but not bursting.   Once they are in the oven… 
  • Place Serrano-Honey Vinegar in sauce pan and heat on low to med-low.  Do not allow to boil! Simmer until reduced by 1/3 to 1/2.   Remove from heat.  It will continue to thicken as it cools.  You want syrup consistency.  If it is too think once it cools, you can return to very low heat and stir in a little extra, non-reduced S-H Vinegar.  (Don’t get frustrated, it takes a few times to know when to remove it the first time)  This can also be done a day or two before!
  • Toss the halved tomatoes as you did with the whole and set aside.
  • Pat asparagus dry. Place on parchment lined baking sheet in single layer to one side, then drizzle with 2 Tbsp of olive oil to coat well.  Sprinkle with salt and pepper.  Add the halved tomatoes on the other side of baking sheet.  
  • When whole tomatoes have been in the oven for 20 minutes, put the asparagus and halves in for the last 20 minutes.  Cook until the asparagus just barely begin to get wrinkled.
  • Remove pans as they are finished.  Arrange asparagus and halved tomatoes on platter or plates, crumble cheese on top and then drizzle with reduction.
  • Use whole tomatoes as a plate garnish next to your steak and potatoes.

 

Don’t want to cook, then how about ordering a meal from your favorite gastro pub and take it home, plating it up, setting the table with nice linens and candles and enjoy it in the privacy of your home.  There is nothing wrong with serving pre-made items – reduces the mess, but can still be tasty.  You can find prepared items at your local grocery store or a gourmet market.  Don’t forget the wine and/or champagne.

Many couples find Valentine’s day a perfect time to stay overnight in a hotel.  You can arrange to have a rose-petal turn down and champagne and chocolates delivered to your room for that special touch.  If you decide to stay at home, turn your bedroom into a special escape by placing lighted candles around the room, place rose petals as a path to the bedroom and the bed.  Have a chilled bottle of champagne waiting and maybe even serve dessert.  Take a bubble bath together – just relax and enjoy each other!

Regardless of how you decide to celebrate Valentine’s Day, just keep in mind to be creative and personal with your plans and enjoy the time you are spending together – because after all, the purpose of the day is to celebrate your love and having quality time together is what’s most important. Of course sparkling gifts {like diamonds} is never a bad idea!  Maybe a fabulous idea would be a gift with a “sparkling” theme….diamonds and champagne!!!!!

It’s a 50th Anniversary Celebration {also known as the Super Bowl}

As you may know, a 50th Anniversary is the Golden anniversary and is certainly a time for celebration!  This Sunday, we all are invited to the HUGE Golden celebration also known as SUPER BOWL 50!  

Now, I’m not a football fan – other than checking the weekly college scoreboard for my favorite team {Go Gators!}, but I do get excited about the Super Bowl for a few reasons — Delicious snacks, the Half-Time show and the COMMERCIALS!!!!  Plus – it’s a great excuse for a party and we all know I love any excuse to have a celebration!!!

GPPA Celebration

I have had the pleasure of planning and producing two weddings for the Scott family, so when Dr. Scott contacted me about assisting with a celebration for the medical practice he began almost 30 years ago I was beyond honored.

The Atlanta History Center was selected as the venue – which was quite fitting for this momentous occasion.  With the renovation just complete, we were one of the first parties held there.  The new Lobby of the Museum is so beautiful and provides a blank slate for whatever the decor vision may be.  The Exhibition Galleries served as the location for Cocktails as guests arrived and began to mingle.  The guest list included both current and previous employees of the practice as well as the charitable organizations that the practice is involved with.

A step and repeat backdrop complete with the company logo was displayed in the rotunda and guests had a great time posing for photos with the incomparable Kristen Alexander Photography.   

Affairs to Remember caterers provided the delectable cuisine for the evening.  Guests were treated to a dual-entree of beef tenderloin and Polenta and Red Pepper encrusted salmon.  Once dinner was complete, there was a short program that included a special presentation,  as well as acknowledgment of the charitable organizations represented and a video made especially for the event.  After the program, a dessert buffet was provided by Affairs to Remember which included an amazing Chocolate Basil Tart Pettit Four, Apple Cobbler Shot and various sweet bites including a chocolate hazelnut brownie.

Scott Mikell of Marquee Events served as emcee and DJ for the evening.  His team also produced a video for the event consisting of interviews from the employees with their remembrances of their time with the practice.  The video was indeed touching and also included several humorous messages as well.

Chelsea Floral Design Studio created the stunning floral arrangements.  We used a deep fall color palette which looked gorgeous in the Grand Overlook Ballroom.  As guests entered the ballroom, there was a table with a lush floral arrangement focal point and vintage-inspired champagne saucer flutes presented for the opening Welcome and Toast.

The evening was truly enjoyed by all who attended and provided for a time to reminisce, remember and reflect of all that the practice has accomplished during its existence.   My team and I were so honored to be a part of this special occasion!!
