Setting the Tone

As I tell all of my clients, setting the tone for your event starts not only with the venue selection, but more importantly with the invitation.  Etiquette states that the level of formality is portrayed by the invitation – not with words, but with the style of the invitation.  The invitation is supposed to inform your guests of what to expect.   It has always been against etiquette to include the phrase “Black Tie” or “Black Tie Optional”, however, the level of formality should be conveyed with the style of the invitation.  For instance, if you received an invitation which was presented in a custom box which upon opening you find a dupioni silk bag holding the invitation with a jeweled brooch, you would be led to assume that the event will be formal.

Whereas if you received an invitation perhaps with images of a beach setting, you would assume the event would be more casual.

Invitations can be custom-made and can be in any imaginable form.  Of course, the more custom an invitation is, the more costly the invitation will be.  However, there are many options of every style of invitation that can fit into your budget while still relaying the feel of the event.

To give a very brief visual tutorial on invitation styles and the message they portray, I’ve prepared the following gallery.

Misc Mon: Did you know that you can make a donation to your favorite charity in lieu of giving guests a favor at your event? Many charities can provide a bookmark or card to inform guests of your donation. It’s a great way to spend money on a worthwhile cause instead of just a trinket.

Thoughtful Thurs:Adding a heart-shaped locket with the photo of a family member that’s passed is a lovely way to have them close to you on your Special Day. The locket can be attached to a bouquet or even placed inside of your wedding gown. http://ow.ly/i/1T34B http://ow.ly/k2tgT
