The Luck of the Irish!!!!

Posted in Other Events, Planning Tips and Information, Weddings tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , at 7:53 am by JBEvents

Aside from the wearing of green and tossing back a few brews – I would venture to say that most {OK, many} people don’t know the history behind St. Patrick’s Day!   In addition to providing a few party ideas, I want to share some of the history of the Holiday!

Irish quote

According to, St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated on March 17, the saint’s religious feast day and the anniversary of his death in the fifth century. The Irish have observed this day as a religious holiday for over 1,000 years. On St. Patrick’s Day, which falls during the Christian season of Lent, Irish families would traditionally attend church in the morning and celebrate in the afternoon. Lenten prohibitions against the consumption of meat were waived and people would dance, drink and feast–on the traditional meal of Irish bacon and cabbage.

Saint Patrick, who was born in Roman Britain during the fifth century, is the patron saint and national apostle of Ireland.

I found it interesting that he was actually kidnapped and brought to Ireland as a slave at the age of 16. He later escaped, but returned to Ireland and was credited with bringing Christianity to its people. In the centuries following Patrick’s death (believed to have been on March 17, 461), the mythology surrounding his life became ever more ingrained in the Irish culture: Perhaps the most well-known legend is that he explained the Holy Trinity (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) using the three leaves of a native Irish clover, the shamrock.

St Patricks clover

Around the ninth or 10th century, people in Ireland began observing the Roman Catholic feast day of St. Patrick.  Since that time, the celebration has certainly changed – at least in the US.  Many cities host parades in honor of St. Patrick’s Day with some of the largest ones being in New York City and Savannah, GA.  The US is where the first parades took place dating all the way back to March 17, 1762.

Today, people of all backgrounds celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, especially throughout the United States, Canada and Australia. Although North America is home to the largest productions, St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated in many other locations far from Ireland, including Japan, Singapore and Russia.

In modern-day Ireland, St. Patrick’s Day has traditionally been a religious occasion. In fact, up until the 1970s, Irish laws mandated that pubs be closed on March 17. Beginning in 1995, however, the Irish government began a national campaign to use interest in St. Patrick’s Day to drive tourism and showcase Ireland and Irish culture to the rest of the world. Today, approximately 1 million people annually take part in Ireland ‘s St. Patrick’s Festival in Dublin, a multi-day celebration featuring parades, concerts, outdoor theater productions and fireworks shows.

It seems that now-a-days, the overall expectation for celebrating is far from a Religious observance and more along the lines of a drink-fest.  But regardless of how you choose to celebrate, perhaps you will find some ideas below ~ from decor ideas, menu items and even drink recipes.

Clover Quiche

Clover Quiche 1Clover Quiche 2 Clover Quiche 3

 Lucky Spinach Quiche

adapted from Smitten Kitchen
10 oz frozen spinach, thawed and drained
3 eggs
1/3 cup half-and-half (or milk or cream)
1/2 cup grated Gruyère or cheddar
1/4 cup grated parmesan
3 oz. cream cheese, room temperature
1/2 cup diced onion (white, red, or green onions)
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
1/2 recipe pâte brisée (recipe below)

Preheat oven to 425ºF. Mix the cream cheese with the eggs, one at a time. Mix in the half-and-half, salt, and pepper. Then add the rest of the ingredients: spinach, Gruyère, parmesan, and onions. Mix. Shape the pâte brisée in either of the two methods described below. After the shape crusts are filled, place the aluminum tins on a baking sheet and bake the quiches for about 20 minutes. Cool for a few minutes.

Carefully remove the quiches from the aluminum tins, line the baking sheet with parchment paper, and place the quiches on the lined sheet. Place the quiches back in the oven for 5-10 minutes until the crust sides crisp up a bit. Let cool for 10 minutes, then serve.

Makes 3 quiches or 12 mini quiches

Pâte Brisée

adapted from Martha Stewart

2 1/2 cups flour
1 cup (2 sticks) butter, chilled and cut into small pieces
1 tsp salt
1/4-1/2 cup ice water

Mix the flour with the salt. Cut the butter into the flour with a pastry cutter or your fingers until it resembles coarse meal. Add the ice water, a little at a time, while gently mixing until the dough sticks together. Split the dough in two. Place each half on a piece of plastic wrap and flatten each into a disc. Wrap the dough in the plastic wrap and refrigerate at least 1 hour, until ready to use.

Makes 2 9-inch pie crusts

Shaping the Crusts

Method 1 (3 quiches)
3 aluminum pot pie pans

1) Take a pair of scissors and cut at four equally spaced points on the edge of the pot pie tin. One snip on the right, one on the left, one at the top, and one at the bottom.

2) Start pushing the cut edges towards one another. Crease the pan side, right under the cut, so that the crease points inwards. Be careful because the edges are sharp.

3) Start rounding out the rest of the pan edge, curving the pan edge.

4) Repeat with the rest of the pan edges.

5) Lightly spray the pan with nonstick spray.

6) Roll out the dough between two sheets of plastic wrap. Split it into 3 equal squares and place each square in a shaped pan. Have the extra dough stick out inwards at the four points where the pie pan edges overlap.

7) Take some foil and fold 12 little thick rectangles. Spray the rectangles with nonstick spray. Place each rectangle between the extra dough flaps on each crust. Press the dough into the bottom of each pan and around the foil rectangles. Take a fork and lightly prick the interior of each crust. Then use the fork tines to press into the top edge of the crusts.

8) Refrigerate the crusts for 10 minutes. Then, fill and bake.

Irish Soda Bread

Irish Soda Bread

Instead of using yeast for leavening, most Irish Soda Bread recipes use baking soda and buttermilk for the task.

3 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/3 cup white sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 egg, lightly beaten
2 cups buttermilk
1 cup raisins (optional)
2 tablespoons caraway seeds (optional)

  1. Preheat oven to 325°F. Grease a 9-by-5-inch loaf pan.
  2. Combine flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, and baking soda. In a separate bowl, blend egg and buttermilk together, then add to the flour mixture. Mix just until moistened. Stir in raisins, if desired. Pour into prepared pan. Sprinkle with caraway seeds, if desired.
  3. Bake for 65 to 70 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the bread comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack. Wrap in foil for several hours, or overnight, for best flavor.

Irish Stew

Irish Stew

Here’s a delicious version of an Irish Stew. Just toss all the ingredients in a slow cooker, and enjoy your day. Then come home to a delicious meal.

1-1/2 pounds beef stew meat
2 tablespoons cooking oil
2 medium potatoes, peeled and cubed (2 cups)
2 medium carrots, cut into 1/2-inch pieces (1 cup)
1 medium onion, cut into thin wedges
1/2 cup sliced celery
1 9-ounce package frozen cut green beans
1 tablespoon instant beef bouillon granules
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
3/4 teaspoon dried thyme, crushed
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1 16-ounce can tomatoes, cut up
1-1/2 cups water

  1. Cut meat into 1/2-inch cubes. In a large skillet, brown meat, half at a time, in hot oil. Drain well.
  2. Meanwhile, in a 3-1/2-, 4-, 5-, or 6-quart crockery cooker, combine potatoes, carrots, onion, and celery. Add frozen beans, bouillon granules, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper. Stir in browned meat, undrained tomatoes, and water.
  3. Cover and cook on low-heat setting for 10 to 12 hours, or on high-heat setting for 5 to 6 hours. Makes 6 servings.

Green Candied Popcorn

Green Popcorn

Green Candied Popcorn

4 quarts popped corn
1 1/2 Cups sugar
1/2 Cup light corn syrup
2 Tablespoons butter
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar (optional, does make mixture slightly more creamy)
1/4 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon baking soda
green food coloring

In heavy saucepan on medium heat melt butter then add sugar, corn syrup, cream of tartar and salt. Increase temperature to medium high and bring mixture to a boil, stirring constantly to dissolve sugar. Once mixture boils, add in food coloring and stop stirring. Boil for 5 minutes (Do not stir). Mixture should be about 250-260 degrees. Remove from heat and carefully stir in vanilla and baking soda. Working quickly and while mixture is foamy, pour mixture over popped corn and gently stir to coat popcorn. Place popcorn into a large roaster or rimmed baking sheet (lined with parchment paper or sprayed with cooking spray) and bake at 200° F for 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes.

Reuben Sandwich with a Twist

A deli favorite and classic, the Reuben is rye bread spread with Russian or Thousand Island dressing and piled high with corned beef (brine-cured beef brisket that originated in Ireland), tangy sauerkraut and melted Swiss cheese. Whether you’re hosting a St. Patrick’s Day party or making lunch, learn the traditional preparation, then try our easy adaptations.

Classic Corned Beef Reuben
Makes 1 sandwich
Prep time: 5 minutes
Cook time: 10-15 minutes

2 slices rye bread—Try pumpernickel or marble rye bread.
2 tablespoons butter, softened
2-3 tablespoons Russian or Thousand Island dressing, plus extra for serving
1/4 pound sliced corned beef
2 slices Swiss cheese
1/2 cup store-bought sauerkraut, drained and rinsed
Dill pickles, optional

  1. Spread slices of bread with butter on one side and dressing on the other. Place one slice butter-side down in a skillet.
  2. Layer with sauerkraut, corned beef and Swiss cheese—in that order—then top with the second bread slice, dressing-side down.
  3. Transfer skillet to stovetop and heat to medium-low. Grill, occasionally pressing with a spatula, until the bottom slice of bread is crisp.
  4. Flip the sandwich, then top with a small, smooth-bottomed plate and weight with a canned good. Continue cooking until bread is crisp and cheese is melted.
  5. Slice diagonally and serve immediately with extra dressing and dill pickles.

New Twists on the Classic Reuben

From simple substitutions to lunch-ready wraps, rethink the Reuben:

  • Substitute pastrami for corned beef.To make a variation known as “The Rachel,” also use colorful cabbage slaw (or prepared slaw from your local deli) in place of sauerkraut.
  • Try sliced turkey instead.Swap the dressing for mustard, too—we love using Dijon, spicy brown or whole-grain mustard.
  • Serve it open-faced.Top one thick, toasted slice of rye bread with dressing, sauerkraut, warm corned beef and cheese, then broil in the toaster oven or bake in a 400°F oven until the cheese melts.
  • Choose a different cheese.Go with semi-firm cheeses that melt well, like buttery Gruyère, nutty-sweet Jarlsberg or smoked Gouda.
  • Wrap it up!Spread one whole-wheat tortilla with dressing, add one slice each of corned beef and cheese, plus a heaping spoonful of sauerkraut or slaw, then wrap.

Inspiration is all Around Us!!…Part 1

Posted in Other Events, Planning Tips and Information, Weddings tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , at 8:00 am by JBEvents

Many times, when clients are planning their event, they do not have a specific theme or even color palette selected.  I find with many of my clients that this can be a very stressful and frustrating component of the planning!  Perhaps trying to think of where to get inspiration is the issue.  Maybe it’s because they feel once the theme or color palette is selected they may decide they don’t like it after all or that by selecting the theme or color it may “limit” other options or selections.  However, that really couldn’t be further from the truth.

I’m getting ahead of myself here though – so let’s step back and consider where our inspiration can come from.  Honestly, inspiration can come from anywhere.  Do you have a favorite artist?  What about a favorite piece of clothing?  Maybe you have a favorite color!  Any of these can serve as an inspiration for your event.  For some, one small detail or item can become the inspiration – such as a favorite book, author, location, even a piece of jewelry.  If something means a great deal to you, why not let that serve as inspiration for your event.

Several years ago, Carolina Herrera, a famous dress designer, used some popular, well-known artists as inspiration for her wedding gown designs.  Take a look at these images and see how she used the inspiration.

Vincent Van Gogh -carolina-herrera-fashion-2_original Saurat Carolina-herrera-fashion-5_original Money gown by Carolina-herrera-fashion-3_original John Singer Sargent s-carolina-herrera-fashion-6_original Henri Matisse-carolina-herrera-fashion-4_original Francisco Goya -carolina-herrera-fashion-1_original

I happen to love Monet, so finding inspiration for other items with that influence led me to these wonderful ideas:

You can most certainly find elements of all types of items to carry out the theme.  Some times, the dress {attire} is the inspiration for other elements.  Many of my clients have used their wedding dress as the inspiration for their wedding cakes.  It doesn’t just have to be a wedding dress that can provide the inspiration – but rather bridesmaids dresses, men’s tuxedos or just a party dress.  Here are some examples of excellent use of attire as the theme inspiration for the celebration cakes.

Truly, inspiration can come from anywhere and all you have to do is look around.  We are here to assist with how to go about incorporating an element into a theme for your next special event.  Check back next week for Part 2 of Inspiration is all Around Us to see how I used ruffles as a design inspiration.

Thoughtful Thurs: Movie Night!!

Posted in Other Events, Planning Tips and Information tagged , , , , , , , , , at 8:15 am by JBEvents

Looking for a fun, economical way to do something nice for a friend or family member?  How about a Movie Night!

Whether you choose to  go to a movie theatre and see one of the new, hot hits, or have a Movie Night at home – setting the scene with the essential items is one way to ensure an enjoyable evening!

If you are going to be a part of the Movie Night – then sending an invitation something like this could be perfect.

If you are sending/giving a Movie Night gift to a friend, then putting together a gift basket with the essentials is an excellent presentation and the treats will be welcomed when enjoying the movie.

movie gift set

Start out with tickets or a Gift Card to a local Movie Theatre.  If the gift is for a specific Movie and you know the day and time the recipient will go, you can pre-purchase the tickets from the theatre – however, purchasing a Gift Card that they could then use at their convenience is a good option.

movie gift card fandango-movie-night-giveaway-fandango-valentine-gift-cards

Purchase favorite movie-time snacks.  You can purchase the individual servings or if the gift is for a larger group, purchase bags of the treats.  It’s easy to pick up boxes of microwave popcorn, but if possible, pop your own and either purchase various seasonings or make your own to add as toppings.

Place all items in a movie-themed container or a popcorn bucket or bowl to keep with the movie theme!!

Add a note to the gift and it’s ready for giving!  Be as creative as you want in the contents of the note and presentation!!

For an at-home movie night – the same idea can be used, but you could include a nice bottle of wine with the popcorn, candy and snacks!

Giving a gift of a Movie Night is a thoughtful gesture and one that will certainly be appreciated!!!

Rehearsal Dinners, Bridal Luncheons/Showers, and other Celebrations!!!

Posted in Other Events, Planning Tips and Information tagged , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , at 7:59 am by JBEvents

Let’s face it, Atlanta has a TON of amazing restaurants and venues for Private Events!  While having options is a great thing – it can also be confusing – so this blog post will focus on a few of my favorite restaurants that would be PERFECT for Rehearsal Dinners, Bridal Luncheons/Showers, Guy’s Night Out, Birthday or Anniversary Party’s as well as any other special occasions!!

My recommendations are based on factors such as quality of food and service, atmosphere, ability to accommodate various sized groups, ease of access and flexibility of the venue on menu as well as other details.

Davio’s Northern Italian Steakhouse at Phipps Plaza

Davio’s Atlanta is located in the heart of Buckhead, Atlanta’s hot spot for the best shopping and the finest dining.

The restaurant offers a large display kitchen, an in-house bakery, vibrant bar, and lounge and outdoor patio complete with soft seating and fire pits.

20130109_164102 20130109_164048

As a Northern Italian Steakhouse their menu includes – Aged New York Strip Sirloin, Filet Mignon, Porterhouse and Veal Chop. The menu also includes well known classic Davio’s recipes such as Tagliatelle Bolognese, Crispy Chicken Livers, Homemade Sausages, Veal Scaloppini and an amazing assortment of Davio’s Spring Rolls that are some of the most delicious tasty morsels around.

If seafood is more of what you desire, they offer a wide selection of fresh seafood dishes to include Organic Salmon, Tuna and Lobster.

To satisfy your sweet tooth, you will find a large variety of desserts, each made in-house daily to even  include house-made gourmet ice cream.

The wine list contains Italian varieties as well as American and other regions around the world.  They also offer a full bar if wine is not your thing!

Davio’s offers Private and Semi-Private Dining areas that can accommodate from 10 to 300 guests.  They have rooms that are cozy enough for smaller celebrations as well as being able to combine them in order to accommodate more guests.
